Why Hammerheads Need Protection

Protecting hammerhead sharks starts with understanding the risks they face in the wild. Among the hammerhead species Fahlo tracks, scalloped and great hammerheads are listed as Critically Endangered, while smooth hammerheads are listed as Vulnerable. 

Their biggest threats come from bycatch and overfishing, including the fin trade and accidental capture during fishing operations meant for other species. For great hammerheads, even release after capture can still lead to high mortality due to stress.

Hammerheads also include more diversity than many people realize. There are nine recognized species, including scalloped, smooth, great, whitefin, Carolina, golden, winghead, scoophead, and bonnethead sharks. Fahlo’s tracking focuses on the first three: scalloped, smooth, and great hammerheads.

These sharks often live in warm, temperate, and tropical waters around the world. Many stay near coastlines or continental shelves, where prey is more abundant.
